What is an outsourced SDR?

An outsourced SDR is a sales development representative provided by a specialist agency that handles your top of funnel outreach and books qualified meetings into your calendar. Instead of hiring, training and managing the role in house, you contract an external team that researches your market, writes the messaging, runs the outbound across calling, LinkedIn and email, and delivers meetings you can sell into.

The role itself is the same one most B2B sales teams already know. A sales development representative sits at the very front of the funnel. Their job is not to close deals. It is to start the right conversations: find accounts that match your ideal customer profile, reach the right people, earn their attention, qualify interest, and hand a warm, ready meeting to a closer. An outsourced SDR does exactly that work, but the person sits inside an agency rather than on your payroll.

That single difference changes a lot about how the role is delivered, how fast it ramps, and how you pay for it. The sections below cover what an outsourced SDR actually does day to day, how it compares to building the function internally, the channels involved, when the model makes sense, and how Booked runs it.

What an outsourced SDR actually does

The output is qualified meetings, but the work behind those meetings is a full pipeline of tasks that runs every week. A good outsourced SDR programme covers the whole job, not just dialling:

  • Account research and list building matched to your ideal customer profile, target titles and regions.
  • Messaging and sequence writing, including the openers and follow ups you review before anything goes out.
  • Multichannel outreach across cold calling, LinkedIn and personalised email, sequenced so prospects hear a consistent story.
  • Reply handling and qualification, so only genuinely interested, fit prospects reach your calendar.
  • Booking and handover, dropping the meeting straight into your calendar with context for the closer.
  • Reporting on activity, replies, meetings booked and show rates, reviewed with you on a regular cadence.

The point of qualification is worth dwelling on. A meeting that shows up but was never a fit is worse than no meeting, because it burns a closer's time. Strong outsourced SDR teams protect what they call the qualified meeting floor: the agreed standard a meeting has to clear before it counts.

How it differs from an in house SDR

An in house SDR is your employee. You recruit them, pay base salary and commission, cover benefits and software, manage their ramp, and absorb the risk if they leave or underperform. Building that desk usually takes three to six months before it produces predictable output, and a single rep is a single point of failure.

An outsourced SDR removes most of that overhead. You are buying a managed outcome from a team that already has the playbooks, the tooling and the trained reps. Outbound typically goes live in days rather than months, the agency covers coaching and coverage if someone is out, and you can scale up or down without hiring or firing. We go deeper on this trade off in our outsourced SDR vs in house comparison, which lays out the costs on both sides fairly.

The channels an outsourced SDR uses

Single channel outreach is fragile. Email alone runs into deliverability limits, calling alone misses people who never pick up, and LinkedIn alone caps out on volume. The strongest programmes are multichannel by design.

Cold calling

Live conversations still convert better than almost anything else when the rep is senior and the list is right. Calling also surfaces objections quickly, which sharpens the messaging on every other channel.

LinkedIn

Connection and conversation on LinkedIn warms prospects before a call and reaches people who screen their inbox. It works best as a layer alongside calling and email, not on its own.

Personalised email

Email scales the reach, but only when deliverability is managed: warmed domains, monitored infrastructure and genuinely relevant copy. Spray and pray email damages your sender reputation and your brand.

When an outsourced SDR makes sense

Outsourcing is not always the right answer, and an honest provider will tell you so. It tends to fit well when:

  • Founders or account executives are doing their own prospecting and it is capping their real job.
  • You need pipeline quickly and cannot wait the three to six months an in house build takes.
  • You are testing a new vertical, region or message and want a fast, low risk read.
  • Your closers are strong but starved of qualified meetings at the top of the funnel.

It is a weaker fit if your sale needs deep, hard to transfer product knowledge from day one, or if you genuinely have the time and budget to build and manage a desk internally. To pressure test your own situation, our five signs your pipeline needs an outsourced SDR team piece is a quick gut check.

How Booked does it

Booked provides fully managed outsourced SDR services with senior reps, not junior dialers. We research your market, write the messaging, run multichannel outbound, and book qualified meetings into your calendar across the US, Canada, EU, MENA, GCC, Asia and APAC, in every time zone.

The model is built on alignment rather than volume. A monthly retainer covers the real delivery work and includes a contractual qualified meeting floor, so you have a guaranteed standard written into the agreement. Above that floor we earn when we book, which means our incentive is the same as yours: more qualified meetings, not more activity. Clients regularly see strong show rates and a healthy return on spend because the meetings are qualified before they land. You can see the full picture in our outsourced SDR services overview or read the step by step in how it works.
